Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Jonathan Heyer. I live and work in Zurich, Switzerland. I am a trained advertising photographer and have my own studio. In my free time, I am underway with my family and our dog somewhere in nature and in the mountains.

Why did you become a photographer?

When I was about 15, the possibility of telling a story in a picture fascinated me and this fascination has not let go of me any more until now.

In which area do you work?

I work in advertising 95% of the time.

Tell us a bit about your photography.

I stage images like stills from a movie. Everything is composed and staged. For a picture, I need a large team of assistants, hair and makeup artists, styling, equipment and producers.

Does one need special equipment for advertising photography?

I often work with artificial light sources and light the entire scene. I frequently use movie lighting and therefore the crews are correspondingly large.

Which of your works is your favorite and why?

I like the superhero story. It is very close to my heart and thus has had a considerable influence on my work.

Which awards are you very proud of?

Twice an ewz selection winner.
Twice as lürzers archive 200 best ad photographers worldwide.

Name something that would have helped you very much had you known it at the beginning of your career.

Don’t shoot what it looks like.
Shoot what it feels like.

To what extent is color management important for your work?

I fully trust my monitors as far as color and contrast is concerned.

With which EIZO monitor do you work?

ColorEdge CG318-4K.

Why did you decide to use an EIZO monitor?

It is the best product on the market.

What do you like most about the EIZO monitor? To what extent is it important for your work?

I like the 4K resolution and the integrated sensor used for self-calibration.

What is your motto?

Life is like a camera just focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.

What advice would you give photographers, who are at the beginning of their career?

When taking a picture, try to get the best out of the image. I say this because it is not possible to rescue a bad picture even through image processing.
